Today, one million plant and animal species face extinction, but a scientific proposal to conserve 30% of our planet's land and ocean by 2030 will help curb this crisis. The 30x30 target has been presented by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and South Africa will play a pivotal role in negotiations for an ambitious global deal for nature. Various speakers shared their insights on the benefits that biodiversity conservation offers South Africa's people, economy and environment. Speakers included Dr. Enric Sala, Ms. Ruth Mthembu, Dr. Rashid Sumaila, Ms, Merrisa Naidoo, Mr. Sineguguzukulu and Ms Buyisiwe Makhoba Dlamnini.

Every year on Youth Day we have the opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young peoples’ voices, actions and initiatives. The youth involved in the non-profit organisation, WILDOCEANS, are continuing in their incredible work to protect our oceans. They believe the time to act is now in protecting our oceans before we risk ocean collapse, subsequent economic loss and face a biodiversity crisis.
